Facing Up: The Journey Up Everest [By Bear Grylls]
I bought this book off Koorong Bookshop (An Australian Christian Bookshop) while buying a birthday present for my cousin and it is about Bear Grylls, the ex-SAS Briton made famous by the TV Series on Discovery Channel's "Man vs Wild".
I always take a liking to outdoor-ing and adventuring but this guy has taken it to a whole new level! In his documentary he literally lives off the jungle and shows us how to survive in even the harshest circumstances.
But this book is about his biography 10 years ago, before "Man vs Wild" was even heard about. It is his account of his journey up Mount Everest, the highest and most renown mountain. And just a few days ago, I was thinking discussing with my adventure friends back in Malaysia about climbing the Himalayas in 2014 to reach Base Camp (The location where aspiring Everest Climbers start their journey up to the peak). Just 5 chapters into this book gave me a perspective on how tough the pre-climb training would be and the training it would involve. Bear Grylls paints an vivid picture of his past that spurs him on to achieve the "unachievable' and cracks opens a window into his soul just wide enough for us to be gripped with anticipation. I am in fact challenged to take to the peaks of Mount Everest, something that would only lurk in the dark corners of my dreams years ago. I am truly challenged and inspired to bring that dream into the illuminative light of the day and make it come true one day.
"All men dream, but not equally, those that dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake up in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act upon their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible." T.E. Lawrence, Seven Pillars of Wisdom
