"Philosophy is dead"

Excerpt from John Lennox's book: Gunning for God

The argument is whether the universe requires a designer. New Atheism champions the idea that science is the only explanation of everything. Stephen Hawkings, in his latest book, The Grand Design, argues that the law of physics and not God provides the real understanding of the universe and it's origin. And because of this the Big Bang was the inevitable consequence of these laws: "Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing."

This is certainly not what we christians believe in, the law of physics undeniably provides us an understanding  of the universe and how everything around us ticks but it most certainly does not provide an understanding of why creation itself takes place and the motive behind this grand design. New Atheist denies the possibility of a philosophical answer to this question because they simply claim not to believe in philosophy. Stephen Hawkings even writes, "Philosophy is dead." which in itself is a philosophical statement. John Lennox describes this as "a classical example of logical incoherence." It contradicts itself.
